The Debate

My two cents.

I was expecting Obama to clean Romney’s clock. But Romney came out swinging. Not even moderator Jim Lehrer could move him off message. Nothing could, not even the truth. Example 1: He said 23 million people are out of work when the actual figure is 12.5 million – Still too many I agree but gee whiz . . .

(and by the way. Newest figures out Friday show unemployment at 7.8%, down from 8.2% because Americans are really finding jobs.)

Here are the things Romney said that worry me the most:

2. He talked about “clean coal” as though there is such a thing. Folks, there is no such thing as “clean coal.” Burning coal endangers the lives of you and your children and your children’s children. It pumps carbon dioxide (Co²) and mercury into the air you breathe. You better care about that.

3. Romney said Obama refuses to drill for oil in our national parks. I take that to mean Romney will. If so, there goes Zion and Red Rock National Parks and pristine Denali National Park in Alaska as well as much more of our precious protected land. And by the way, thanks to a Republican controlled House of Representatives, the five biggest oil companies are subsidized to the tune of $2.4 billion a year and allowed to write off all their drilling costs.

4. Here’s what Obama said. “Governor Romney’s central economic plan calls for a $5 trillion tax cut on top of the extension of the Bush tax cuts, so that is another trillion dollars. And $2 trillion in additional military spending that the military hasn’t asked for. That is $8 trillion.”

Romney responded, “I don’t have a five trillion dollar tax cut. I don’t have a tax cut of the scale that you’re talking about.”

Seriously?

Look at the math. All of Romney’s plans cost money. He would lower income tax rates by 20% in all tax brackets, eliminate taxes on capital gains and dividends for those earning less than $200,000. His plan would cost $360 billion in year one before it is offset by closing loopholes (he doesn’t say which ones) and lowering deductions (he doesn’t tell us about them either.) Watch out for this. It will be very expensive.

5. Romney talked about an unelected board (like Sarah Palin’s death panel) that’s going to tell people the kind of medical treatment they can receive. In fact the board that President Obama will appoint is charged with bringing down Medicare costs but prohibited from “rationing care, shifting costs to retirees, restricting benefits or raising the Medicare eligibility age. So the board doesn’t have the power to dictate to doctors what treatments they can prescribe.”

Why didn’t the president challenge the governor on his outrageous statements? Why didn’t Obama bring up the 47%? I can’t imagine. Maybe he’s saving up for next time.

Or maybe he was just letting Romney hang himself on untruths.

Is deceitful Mitt Romney who we really want for president?

To call what happened a debate is ridiculous. It was a stage for both sides to pontificate and, as you have pointed out, lie. It was little more than a paid commercial for both parties. The moderator didn’t moderate, but then neither Romney nor Obama gave him much of a chance or respected the rules of debate. They need a moderator who will cut them off when they stray from the questions and a fact checker who will call them on their bullsh!t.

And what are these debates for? The 5% of undecided Americans? You? Me? I refuse to watch the debates as though they are any more real than “The Housewives of Orange County” or “Jersey Shores.” This isn’t reality programming. It’s political advertising at its worst. Time we stopped the “debates” unless someone teaches the candidate the rules of debate and then enforces them. I have better things to do with my time than watch one or two candidates grandstand for an evening.

And what about the other candidates running for President of the U.S.? Is this an example of the two parties working together to shut out possible third party candidates who may have some real answers to the problems this country faces? Right now we need all the good ideas we can think of to stop the downward spiral in America.

Who are these undecided voters anyway? I find it really hard to believe anyone doesn’t know who they’ll vote for in view of the mindless, endless, in-your-face media reporting of the last 12 months.

I am not going to pass on the comment about the Real Housewives of Orange County not being real to my significant other. That is so hurtful

    Romney’s Honesty Moment.

All pundits agreed that Romney won the first round of their scheduled 3-round debates. Without doubt, his bullying tactics against an unprepared opponent and a hapless moderator was impressive. He did, however, commit a fatal error: Mixed in with his myriad of unchallenged lies (he assumed that 62 million viewers were suffering mass amnesia), he actually told one truth: if president, he would kill Big Bird because feeding him was a budget buster (it’s an infinitesimally small sliver of the budget). He thereby wrote off Big Bird’s pre-kindergartner fans, along with the 47% lazy, irresponsible moochers living off government handouts, as those who would not vote for him anyway. What Romney overlooked, however, was the millions of angry parents and grandparents who will make sure that Big Bird poops all over him.

  • I did not feel Romney won anything except the favor of the media. He was arrogant, rude, disrespectful. His little pull the head back and give off with the grin, as well as lack of details to explain anything he plans, along with his interruption of Jim Lehrer only told me he cannot be straigt-forward, he is full of hot-air, Obviously, the man has a very short-fuse. Not what we the people need in the White House.
Jim Lehrer didn’t take control of the debate. On to Act II.

  • Mike Lance says:

The Mitt-ster reminded me of a glib salesman who will say whatever he thinks the customer wants to hear in order to close the deal. I’m sure you’ve all encountered at least one. The big problem is that after you buy the slick line of bull****, he’ll deliver whatever unwanted solution he can get away with.

I am not going to pass on the comment about the Real Housewives of Orange County not being real to my significant other. That is so hurtful.

Some of the people I’ve heard, say they’re going to vote for Romney because
    1) He’s a friend to Israel
    2) He can straighten out the economy! (Who made the mess in the first place?)
    3) He’s going to revese Obamacare

In my mind, he’s got a smart business mind, but very little “humanity”. (He’d also make a good-looking cover for “Gentleman’s Quarterly”, but little else.)
